If you have never had  a charlie horse, then good for you.  Charley horse is another name for a muscle spasm. Charley horses can occur in any muscle, but they’re most common in the legs. These spasms are marked by uncomfortable muscle contractions.  They can be incredibly painful.  A very sharp pain.

Charlie horses can be caused by:

  • inadequate blood flow to the muscle
  • muscle injuries
  • exercising in excessive heat or cold
  • overuse of a specific muscle during exercise
  • stress, most often in the neck muscles
  • not stretching before exercise
  • nerve compression in the spine
  • taking diuretics, which can lead to low potassium levels
  • mineral depletion, or having too little calcium, potassium, and sodium in the blood
  • dehydration

My skeleton has always been bad.  I was born with deformed hip joints and did not walk until I was three.  I eventually had both hip joints replaced at about age 50.  I live in a cold climate and sometimes the charlie horses were frequent and hard.

I told my doctor and he prescribed a muscle relaxer.  The charlie horses persisted so he prescribed a different muscle relaxer.  This was better but did not completely stop the charlie horses.

About this time I had begun taking a few drops of cbd oil under my tongue everyday.  I had heard of a lot of miraculous things associated with cbd and decided to try it.  I wasn’t taking it for any particular reason other than overall health.

I had quit taking the muscle relaxer and it was actually several weeks before I read an article online about muscle spasms.  The article stated that cbd oil helped relieve muscle spasms.  That was when I realized how long it had been since I had a charlie horse.  I had previously had them often and sometimes even several times in the same day.

Now, it has been months since I had a charlie horse.  I will update this post if anything changes, but right now I am very happy.

I would recommend cbd oil to anyone that has muscle spasms.
