One side effect or perhaps even purpose of the ELD is make you use your brakes on a steep grade instead of depending on the Jake to control your speed. Let’s say you want to stay exactly on the speed limit of 35 MPH on a grade. Maybe the Jake doesn’t hold you to 35 so you increase to 36 or 37. If you don’t want to be in violation, you must use your brakes and get them to heat up to the fail point, instead of using common sense and allowing the engine brake speed of 36 to be adequate.
